David was born in December 1955. He trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
He worked for the BBC in various roles – as a journalist, radio presenter, TV reporter and TV presenter – from 1973 to 1994.
For a decade, David was a familiar voice as a BBC Television network announcer, from 1979 to 1989. He also voiced presentation trails for BBC Television (c. 1982).
David appeared in-vision presenting the TV Choice slot within Breakfast Time (BBC One, 1983 – 1985) and Noticeboard, which informed viewers of the goods and services offered by the BBC, on BBC One from 1986 to 1987.
In 1987, he made a rare on-screen appearance sitting in the BBC One continuity suite on an edition of TVS’s daytime show TV Weekly, where he showed viewers behind-the-scenes at BBC Presentation.
David moved away from the microphone and became an assistant presentation editor.



Wheal began his training career at the BBC in 1989 and was head of the BBC’s team of media trainers, advising senior Foreign and Commonwealth Office diplomats in interview and presentation skills.
He also trained many BBC senior managers and presenters in broadcasting skills.
Since 1991, David has worked in the corporate sector with an impressive list of clients, training executives in press, television and radio interview techniques, as well as presentation and communication skills.
He has also helped many major companies with the development of crisis management strategies and has advised numerous multi-national organisations in over 30 countries.
David was a director of Media Counsellors Ltd (1994 – 2018), managing director of Leadership Communications Ltd (1996 – 2015), and director of 3D Communications (2018 – 2020).
In September 2020, he became chairman of Tillbrook Holdings.
