What We Do With Personal Information

We will only utilise functionality which has been subject to stringent quality control and security checks. We take great care to ensure that any potential security risks are addressed. Where software updates for open source/third party products are released, we will apply those updates within a 24-hour period.

Where a user has a registered account on our system, their password is encrypted using MD5 hashing. The TV Room recommends that users do not use the same password for multiple websites/services. We will never ask you for your password. Where a user has forgotten their password, they should follow the password reset process.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created from the visitor’s e-mail address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of the visitor’s comment, their profile picture is visible to the public in the context of their comment.

Contact Form

Our contact form requires visitors to supply their name, e-mail address and message text. Although the information supplied via this mechanism is not stored on a database, it is supplied to the site editor in the form of an e-mail. This e-mail record is retained in an e-mail archive indefinitely. Any subsequent correspondence relating to this initial communication – which will be by e-mail – will also be retained indefinitely.

How We Use Cookies

Advertisements that appear on The TV Room website are delivered to visitors by our advertising supplier, who sets cookies. These cookies allow the advertisement server to recognise the visitor’s computer. This information allows advertisement networks to, among other things, deliver targeted advertisements that they believe will be of most interest to you.

Our advertisement supplier works with a variety of advertising partners, so it’s likely that visitors will see advertisements from various other networks.

Our advertisement supplier collects and sends the following information (made available from the visitor’s browser) to their demand partners: IP address; geographical data (derived from the IP address); user agent; operating system; device type; unique user ID (randomly generated identifier); current URL; and IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) interest category.

Our advertisement supplier tracks ad impressions, video-related events/errors (i.e., pause, mute, 100% plays, etc) and ad click events. Various cookies are used for the following purposes: delivering targeted advertisements to specific visitors, storing user identifiers and collecting anonymous ad platform stats.

The TV Room accepts no responsibility for any third party advertisements that may appear on our website.

Data Retention

If a visitor leaves a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information. User profile data is stored indefinitely.

In terms of user data captured by our advertising partner: log data (IP address, geographical data, user agent, operating system, device type) is stored for thirty days. The unique user ID is stored in cookies and is retained for one year.

What Rights You Have Over Your Data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal or security purposes.
