Sally Lawrence enjoyed a busy and varied broadcasting career spanning the late 1980s to the early 2000s.
Before her work as a television announcer, she built a presence in travel and radio: from 1988 to 1992 she reported for AA Roadwatch, including airborne traffic reporting for the Jambuster travel news service, and from 1990 to 1992 she presented a love songs slot, 10-2, on Radio Essex.
Alongside that radio and travel work, she was a continuity announcer at Channel 4 from 1988 to 1992. She subsequently moved to the BBC, where she announced across BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Worldwide Learning Zone from 1992 to 2003.
Correspondence
Paul R. Jackson corresponded with Sally in October 2017 and asked about her career and for any memorable moments.
“I have worked in media for the last 27 years. My work includes continuity announcing for BBC Television, Channel 4 and World Service.
“I joined the BBC from Channel 4 and loved being there as they sent a stretch limo for me to the overnights – very grand. BBC was great fun – the Fox restaurant, the late trolleys, the dreaded OU weekends.
“I keep in touch with Malcolm (Eynon), Matthew (Jackson) and various others when we meet at reunions.
“My most memorable moment whilst at the BBC was being on duty for the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in September 1997.
“I have been a presenter in commercial radio and BBC local radio. Experience includes script writing, presenting, directing and producing.
“I have been working as a voice coach for BBC Academy, Skills Workshop, the National Health Service, Al Jazeera Doha and Al Jazeera San Francisco. I’ve also worked for Mouchel and Parsons Brinkerhoff, as well as private clients.
“I have been running a theatre company for 17 years, teaching children and adults, touring productions in schools and also as a small-scale touring theatre – latterly working with Eric Chappell writer of Rising Damp, Duty Free and Home to Roost to name but a few.
“I work as a presenter for BBC Academy and a voice coach for them also.
“I run Outloud Productions Ltd theatre company and recently opened up a theatre company called 2handers, acting and voiceovers when they come up.
“I also examine on behalf of LAMDA.”
