Trevor Maskell worked as a freelance BBC TV voice-only announcer from 1962 to 1963.

He changed his name professionally to Trevor Lucas and provided commentary on BBC TV Children’s Danish film House of Clay (8th September 1964).

No information is available as to why he adopted this new professional name.

Trevor moved to ATV London and gained a reputation as something of a smoothie, receiving substantial volumes of viewers’ fan mail.

In July 1968, Trevor had the distinction of making the final announcement on the station before it was replaced by London Weekend Television. He remarked that night that he had announced for them “on and off” since 1963.

Trevor transferred to ATV in the Midlands from 1968, when the station won its seven-day franchise there.

Former colleague Keith Martin recalled:

“Trevor Lucas was with ATV Midlands at weekends for a long time. I think ATV offered him weekends because that shift was well rehearsed when ATV London was around.

“Now for a secret. Like certain other ITV presenter/announcers he slept overnight in the studio in a red sleeping bag. Kevin Morrison told me, so it must be true.

“In addition, Kevin presented the bag to me when I was on the ATV roster.”

In September 2024, Bob Huckin on Facebook recalled that he invariably had cigarette smoke curling up from his desk and into shot.

Lucas voiced presentation trails for BBC Television c. 1969 to 1970.

His other television credits include:

  • Charlie Drake: The Return of Uncle Henry/The Angry Young Plumber (1959)
  • No Hiding Place (1959 and 1961)
  • Announcer’s voice in Steptoe and Son (The Diploma) (1962)
  • Interviewer on Honey Lane (ATV, 1969)

Sadly, he committed suicide on a train track. Date unknown.
