Tim Ewart was born in Suffolk and began his journalistic career in 1967 at the Bury Free Press, his local newspaper.
He subsequently worked for the Leicester Mercury and the Bermuda Sun before transitioning into broadcasting through local radio and the BBC World Service.
In 1977, Ewart moved into television as a reporter and occasional presenter on BBC TV’s Look North, based in Leeds. He appeared from Washington in 1988 when the programme celebrated its 20th anniversary.
Ewart joined Thames Television in 1980 before moving to ITN a year later as a foreign correspondent.
Between approximately July 1989 and July 1993, he served as an occasional news presenter, on the Weekend News and News at One. He left ITN in 1993 to present Newsroom South East for the BBC, but returned in September 1996.
During his distinguished career at ITN, Ewart ran four foreign bureaux: Warsaw, Washington, Moscow and Johannesburg.
He served as sports editor from September 2003 to January 2006, and in 2009 was appointed royal editor for ITV News.
Ewart left ITN in 2017 after 31 years of service, having reported from over 100 countries.
He authored several books on the monarchy:
- Queen Elizabeth II: The Archives (2012);
- The Treasures of Queen Elizabeth II (2012);
- Queen Elizabeth II: A Celebration of Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday (2016).
He also co-wrote Invitation to the Royal Wedding – about Prince William and Catherine Middleton – with Ian Lloyd.
He is married to former ITN colleague Penny Marshall.

Correspondence
Paul R. Jackson corresponded with Tim in July 2025 about his career.
Who were your reporter/presenter colleagues at Look North and how often did you present the programme?
“Ken Cooper, Mike Smartt, Khalid Aziz.
“We all presented the programme on a rotational basis, but Ken was the main guy.”
When you worked at Thames TV, did you ever present the main regional news programme?
“I was only a reporter.”
Was it a tough decision to leave ITN after three years to join Newsroom South East; and where were you based?
“Yes. I was based at Elstree.
“It seemed like a good decision at the time. It wasn’t.”
What were the major news stories that you covered – either in the studio or on location – that stand out in your long career?
“I covered: martial law in Poland, the end of the Cold War, the collapse of the Soviet Union, the end of the Mandela era in South Africa, farm seizures in Zimbabwe, a small part of the second Iraq war, countless royal stories, mostly trivial, and hundreds I don’t recall in between.”
What have you been doing since you left ITN?
“I worked for a time as a royal commentator for Sky Australia (Royal Wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle, May 2018) and MSNBC (Prince Philip’s funeral, April 2021).
“I am now fully retired, walking my dog and minding my own business!”
