Barrie was born in Rotherham. He started out as a student broadcaster, before moving to BBC Local Radio.

Alastair was a broadcaster whose career spanned four decades. He was born and brought up in Burton-upon-Trent.
…Austin, Craig
Craig Austin combines roles as a broadcaster, writer and producer. He started his media career in radio and moved on to television, dipping his toes in ink along the way.
Craig is from Uddingston, on the outskirts of Glasgow, and is the youngest of four boys. He started a career in medical laboratory sciences but after three years he returned to student life to study media. He does miss the white coat though!
It was during his final year as a student that he got his first professional broadcasting gigs, writing and presenting travel and traffic reports on a number of Scotland’s radio stations, as well as doing commercial voiceovers. A short spell hosting his own shows on Radio Tay in Dundee followed, before Craig found himself in Carlisle, working as an announcer, presenter and producer for Border Television.

Colin Bower was born in Cheltenham Spa, and took his first steps in broadcasting as a disc jockey with radio stations in Africa before embarking on a television career that would span decades.

Anne was a member of the Grampian Television announcing team in the 1980s.
O’Hara, James
James was a graduate of Manchester and Aberdeen universities. He joined BBC Scotland as a radio/TV announcer in 1977, having spent a number of years at Grampian TV as a presenter/announcer.

David was a continuity announcer with Grampian Television. He stayed in Aberdeen after retiring from the company and he was a frequent correspondent to local newspaper letters pages. David also announced on other ITV stations, including Anglia, HTV and ATV (Midlands).
Blair, Lesley
Lesley was one of the early Grampian TV announcers (1960s/1970s). She also worked with ATV (Midlands).

Christine was born in Birmingham. She attended the Birmingham School of Speech and Drama (1961 – 1963) and the Lucie Clayton Modelling School (spring 1964).

Duncan, Kay
Kay was a Grampian Television in-vision continuity announcer (1980). She was later an Aberdeen-based drama teacher.
Duncanson, John
John was born in Prestwick. After a BBC course in broadcasting, his first TV appearance was as a continuity announcer on ABC Television (early 1960s), the weekend contractor for the north of England and the Midlands.
…Lavender, Maggie
Maggie Lavender is a senior announcer for Scottish Television. Before joining STV, she was based at Glasgow Airport, presenting morning reports for Flightwatch. Her voice was also heard in the Grampian TV area for a number of years prior to its rebranding as STV.
Maggie is also a trained actress.
Penny, Daphne
Daphne was a Grampian TV continuity announcer and presenter (1961 – 1965). She presented The Rogies and Romper Room.
Daphne died in 1993.
Fraser, Kate
Kate was a long-serving Grampian in-vision continuity announcer and local news bulletin presenter. She later joined the STV continuity team in Glasgow and her voice was heard not only on STV, but also in the old Grampian TV area.
Lamont, Colin
Colin was a freelance continuity announcer for Scottish TV, Grampian and Border. He went on to set up Centre Radio in Stirling and became cult Scottish shock jock, Scottie McClue.
Mackenzie, Elizabeth
Elizabeth was a Grampian TV announcer (1960s and 1970s).
Todd, Alan
Alan is a former Scottish and Grampian TV announcer and Radio Clyde DJ. He went on to become a presenter on Grampian and Scottish TV.
Galloway, Robin
Robin was one of Grampian TV’s best-known in-vision continuity announcers (1980s and 1990s). He later became one of the main presenters on the Scottish version of Real Radio.
Macleod, Lesley
Lesley was a long-serving Grampian Television in-vision continuity announcer (dates TBC) and occasional programme presenter.
Neville, Daphne
Daphne is a former Crossroads actress and continuity announcer for Border Television and Grampian Television (1970s/early 1980s). Daphne also worked for Central TV, HTV West and BBC Radio 4.
Jason, John
John was a Grampian Television in-vision announcer in the 1980s. He also popped up on other ITV stations as an announcer over the years, including time with TVS as an out-of-vision announcer (late-1980s – early 1990s).
Matheson, Kate
Kate was born in 1936, as Audrey Craig-Brown, in Newton Mearns, a suburb of Glasgow. She took various parts in repertory in theatres in both England and Scotland, sometimes alongside the actor/announcer Graham Roberts, whom she married in 1959.

Brodie, Anne
Anne was a Grampian Television in-vision continuity announcer (1971 – 1975, early 1980s). She also freelanced for Scottish Television (1975 – 1978).
Ashe, Anna-Maria
Anna-Maria Ashe was a continuity announcer at BBC Scotland, TVS and Grampian Television in the mid-1980s. She also presented lunchtime news bulletins in-vision during her time with BBC Scotland (1986). She later moved to the TVS nightly news magazine Coast to Coast where she did a stint at presenting/newsreading for the Southampton edition, before moving to the Maidstone programme.
Anna-Maria was replaced at Maidstone by Liz Wickham when she moved to LWT as the main anchor of LWT News and LWT News Weekend. She was one of the main presenters on the London Tonight programme on ITV until February 2004.
Kynoch, Douglas
Douglas was born in Aberdeen. He was teaching English in Germany when he heard about a new ITV station opening in Aberdeen.

Jimmy is a former Grampian smd Scottish TV announcer and presenter. Since his departure from the announcing/presenting role, he remained a favourite in the north east of Scotland and was often to be seen supporting charitable events. He has also done media consultancy work.
Imray, June
June was born in Aberdeen. She graduated with an MA arts degree from the University of Aberdeen and taught for two years in Aberdeen and Somerset.

Scott was a Grampian TV in-vision announcer (late-1980s – early 1990s). He also presented a Grampian-produced antiques show with Fiona Armstrong.
Crawford, Tracey
In 1989, Tracey began her career voicing and creating commercials/promotions and producing shows for Northsound Radio in Aberdeen.

Diana is a former Grampian Television in-vision continuity announcer. She went on to become an announcer at BBC Radio 4.
Symon, Jim
Jim is a well-known Scottish radio and television broadcaster. He was an in-vision announcer for Scottish Television (1983 – TBC). He later freelanced as an out-of-vision announcer for both Scottish TV and Grampian TV (dates TBC). He combined this work with the position of transmission controller for SMG’s (Scottish Media Group) television division – a post which he left in 2000.
Jim’s voice is well known to viewers across the UK as he’s voiced several television advertisements. He was also chosen to be the voice of a new, talking version of the ever-popular Action Man toy.
Since leaving the core staff at SMG, Jim has returned to radio. He has presented the late-night music programme on Westsound Radio based in Ayr; he later presented on radio station Clyde 2.
He still occasionally presented for Scottish and Grampian TV.
Cunningham, Lynn
Lynn was a Grampian Television in-vision continuity announcer (1971 – 1979). Her son, Paul, recalls that she first applied for the job after she was dared to by her husband. Sadly, she died in 1982 at the age of 44.
Smith, Derek
Derek’s broadcasting career began in 1999 at The Travel Channel where he was a continuity announcer. He was a member of the original team of announcers (and ‘the Scottish voice’) at the Biography Channel when it launched in the UK in 2000. Also in 2000, Derek took on a newsreading role at Radio Forth in Edinburgh; he remained there until joining Living TV as a continuity announcer in 2003.
Derek headed back north and joined the SMG continuity team in 2005, providing announcements on Scottish and Grampian TV (later rebranded as STV). He performed the first live announcement from STV’s new studios at Pacific Quay on Saturday 22nd July 2006.
Derek still finds time to fit in his other gig – travelling the world as a BA cabin crew member – which he has been doing since 1985.
Stein, Gary
Gary combined in-vision continuity for Grampian with radio presenting for Northsound 1, having previously done in-vision work for the local cable distributor in Aberdeen. When Grampian was taken over by STV he was left with only the radio work and subsequently left Aberdeen to join Clyde 1. He later reportedly left Clyde to go into radio management.
Scott, Anne
Anne was a Grampian TV reporter, newsreader and co-presenter of North Tonight in the 1990s. She then joined BBC Scotland as a TV continuity director/announcer. She also announced and read the news on BBC Radio Scotland (until c. 2006).
Stuart, Arlene
Arlene was a popular Grampian in-vision announcer (1980s and early 1990s). She moved to the BBC Scotland TV as a continuity director/announcer. She later presented the mid-morning show on Forth 2. Arlene continued with television work as presenter of The River – a Grampian programme which followed the River Dee from its source to the sea traversing Braemar, Lochnagar, Balmoral, Glen Tanar and Banchory. She has also guest-presented for Scottish Passport.
Donald, Margaret
Margaret was a Grampian Television (relief) in-vision continuity announcer (1980 – TBC).
Thomson, Kennedy
Kenny was a senior, long-serving Grampian TV in-vision announcer and programme producer. Kennedy died in 1997, just before the takeover of Grampian by SMG.
McKenna, Cameron
Cameron’s broadcasting career began in 1990, as a presenter with Eastend Radio. During his career, Cameron has interviewed a number of big name celebrities including Dame Shirley Bassey, Nichelle Nichols (communications officer Lieutenant Uhura, Star Trek), Paul Young, Darius, the stars of Star Wars and Marty Pellow to name but a few. Cameron has also worked alongside Dirty Dozen actor Tom Busby.
Other radio credits include: co-presenter of the 96.3 QFM breakfast show with Gary Marshall.
Cameron worked (freelance) for Scottish Television as an announcer (dates TBC); his voice was also heard in the Grampian TV region for a number of years prior to its rebranding as STV. He is currently a continuity announcer with BBC Scotland TV.
McLaughlin, Jack
Jack started his broadcast career on pirate radio. He had stints with Radio Scotland, Britain Radio and Radio 270. In the late-1960s and early 1970s, Jack was an announcer with Grampian Television. He then moved to Scottish TV.

Gaelic speaking presenter of Grampian Television’s Telefios Gaelic-language news magazine in the 1990s.
Anderson, Andrew
Andrew Anderson worked for Grampian Television as a reporter and presenter of North Tonight from February 1988 until October 1992. He went on to work for Reuters Television as the first Scotland correspondent for the fledgling breakfast TV company GMTV. He’s now working for BBC Scotland news and current affairs.
