Emily began her broadcasting work at the University of Bristol where she finally found a place to combine all of her favourite things – performing, chatting and listening to music. She presented and produced her own show on the student radio station Burst and, determined to create a clear identity for her weekly two-hour slot, channelled her obsession for new music into organising live sessions with students and local performers.
Not satisfied with university radio just being a hobby, Emily also fought to bring her new infatuation with broadcasting into her studying and managed to convince her tutors to qualify her placement with local radio station, Vibe 101, as part of her degree.
Studying drama at Bristol University also brought some other weird and wonderful experiences her way, but it was the drama scene outside of her degree that led to performances in Ben Elton’s Popcorn at the Edinburgh Festival and producing West Side Story.
Since May 2008, Emily has worked as an announcer for BBC TV (freelance since 2012). Highlights include introducing: the Royal Wedding on BBC One on 29th April 2011; HM The Queen’s Christmas Speech; Coldplay at the BBC; 2010 World Cup; and the Chilean miners rescue coverage. On 5th November 2010, her microphone was opened prematurely, before the end of The Graham Norton Show on BBC One and viewers heard her rehearsing her next announcement.
Emily has been a freelance voiceover artist/broadcaster since 2011, including presenting her Saturday afternoon show on BBC Radio Bristol and Somerset. She has also voiced adverts for Magnum, Durex, Kia and Rowse Honey as well as numerous others. She also records trails regularly for BBC Radio 3.
Emily has also worked as the ‘sound of the station’ for Jono Coleman’s nationwide Breakfast Show in Australia. She is creator and founder of Passion Pods (launched in 2012) – a series of podcasts that aim to inspire and encourage young people to pursue the entrepreneurial potential of their passions.
Correspondence
Paul R. Jackson corresponded with Emily in November 2017 and asked if the information he had sent was correct: “That all sounds good to me. My work with BBC Radio Bristol is more of a freelance situation these days, but does continue in various shapes and forms! I was also the voice of BBC Three for the last year or so of its pre-online life, alongside Ashleigh Whitfield.”
