Barry was born in Sydney, Australia in 1932. He originally studied medicine but moved into radio as a commercial announcer (1950 – 1953). For the next six years, he worked in both television and radio for ABC as a newsreader; he also presented Thursday at One (1957), Night Out at Scott’s (1958) and Happy New Year (1959). He worked on commercial TV in Melbourne (1959 – 1960) and presented Today (1960).
Barry then moved to the UK and was a BBC TV newsreader (October 1960 – May 1963). He presented BBC Television’s local magazine programme for the south east region, Town and Around (1961 – 1962).
He returned to Australia and was appointed newsreader for ATV-0 (now Channel Ten) prior to its launch in August 1964. He co-hosted the channel’s opening night and its first current affairs programme The Pacemakers. He later appeared on Jimmy Hannan’s Tonight show and hosted and produced ATV-0’s weekly current affairs programme Dateline (February 1970 – 1973).
He made acting appearances in the following TV programmes: And the Big Men Fly (1974); Rush (1974); Division 4 (1975); Homicide (1975); Matlock Police (1975); End Play (1976); Twenty Good Years (1979); Prisoner Cell Block H (1983). He was a newsreader in an episode of Neighbours (December 1999).
Barry died aged 82 in Sydney.
