Alec was born in Doune, Perthshire. He was an actor, who later worked as an announcer for Scottish TV (1964 – 1969) and also for BBC Scotland TV.
He worked at Pitlochry Festival Theatre (1973), but he is perhaps best known as one of the original characters – Dougal Lachlan – in STV’s Take the High Road (1980 – 1992).
Other TV credits include:
- The Omega Factor (1979);
- Grange Hill (1996);
- Taggart (1997);
- Monarch of the Glen (2000).
His son, David Monteath, is an actor, whose TV credits include two episodes of Coronation Street as Gary Knox (1986).
