Mike began his BBC career as a station assistant at BBC Radio Merseyside. In 1970, he presented Youthwise and Homeward Bound.
He moved to London to be a network announcer, where his very distinctive voice was heard on BBC One and BBC Two (1973 – 1985).
He also voiced presentation trails for BBC Television (1974 – 1977).
In 1983, he took a career break from Presentation and worked for six months at BBC Radio Devon.
Mike sadly passed away in September 2013.
Former BBC Events producer Tim Marshall shared a memory with Paul R. Jackson in August 2023:
“I knew Mike through the person I shared a house with in Chiswick, who had been at BBC Radio Manchester with him.
“When Mike signed off – ‘…and so from all of us here at BBC Television, I wish you a very goodnight…’ – we knew 10 minutes later (a cycle ride from TV Centre to our house in Chiswick), there would be a knock on the door for a quick night cap!”
David Barton recalled on Facebook in August 2023:
“I remember on one election night, Mike suggested we should all wear evening dress in NC1. He and I were the only ones who bothered, and when we went to hospitality afterwards, people thought that we were the waiters!”
Nick Sharwood-Smith recalled on Facebook in August 2023:
“As well as his career in continuity, Mike was a somewhat eccentric, but rather delightful afternoon presenter at BBC Radio Devon, following the launch in January 1983.
“He stayed for six months (a career break), during which time he would regularly wander into Exeter town centre, Uher slung over his shoulder, searching out interviews with anyone prepared to talk to him.
“On one of the more memorable occasions, there was a biker gang, The Satans Slaves, who hung out in a local pub. It is a matter of some regret that a record of this social encounter does not seem to have made it into the archives.”
