Correspondence
Paul R. Jackson corresponded with Jenni in January 2022:
“The history of the announcer is so interesting and I for one am proud to be here doing it – the first Welsh national female. I have done a lot of research on the job too and so honoured to be amongst the lovely line-up of voices here at the BBC.”
How did you get the announcers job and who trained you?
“I produced a radio documentary called The Chaplain’s Suitcase (BBC Radio 4, 27th December 2016) and through this I got this job! Here is a link – a life changing piece of work about an old suitcase I found!
“Phil (Vowels) and Duncan (Newmarch) trained me and I’m based in London. 26th February 2018 was my first shift – this was office-based, being shown the ropes. My first time on air was Friday 2nd March (BBC Two) and Saturday 10th March 2018 (BBC One).
“The first time solo was Friday 6th April on BBC Two. I have a feeling it was a stressful day of live snooker –so on standby and not much to say!!”
Have you worked on any Christmas day shifts?
“I have never worked on Christmas day. I have worked every New Year’s Day for the past three years. I cherish my time in Wales with my family on this special day!”
How far in advance do you know which announcing shifts you will cover – and with so many freelancers now, do you get a minimum number of shifts guaranteed?
“I have my diary in advance of around two months. Very organised. However with Covid, that all changed and sick cover became a constant!”
Any career highlights?
“Producing and announcing Your Home Made Perfect on BBC Two. The Chaplain’s Suitcase, my BBC Radio 4 documentary about an old suitcase that belonged to a war hero! Oh and when I graduated from Italia Conti, I was Hermione Granger’s body double in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.”
Would you like to do more work behind the camera?
“Yes – I am working on another programme at the moment – a labour of love about an incredible lady who runs a boxing club with the Met Police in Brixton. This will again, be my own commission.”
