The Dublin native was born in 1964. His Raheny-based family was steeped in the Irish language and it was perhaps no surprise that his education was delivered in his mother tongue. Aengus joined RTÉ in 1987, working initially as a runner before, two years later, moving into radio newsreading. He later took on a similar role on television, reading Nuacht bulletins initially, before making the transition to English-language news output, where he became a regular face on the Six-One News and Nine o’Clock News.

In 2013, Aengus became somewhat of an internet sensation, when footage of him applying make-up and adjusting his tie went viral. The short clip was from an RTE News Now broadcast, where Aengus didn’t realise he was on air. The blooper even featured on US television, including CNN and Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show.

In November 2017, Aengus announced his plan to leave RTÉ, saying he wanted to explore other career possibilities. “I have spent 30 wonderful years in RTÉ. I have enjoyed going into work every day. I am looking forward to the next chapter of my life.”

Aengus signed off on his final news broadcast – the St Patrick’s Day edition of Six-One News and Sport – on Saturday 17th March 2018.

It’s been a privilege to sit in this chair down through the years and be welcomed in your homes. Thank you for that and your kindness. I’ve had a wonderful time.
