Neil is an internationally acclaimed artist and photographer. He was born in Aintree, Sefton.
He attended the Liverpool Institute, now the Paul McCartney-sponsored Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts.
He was in a heavy metal band called Marseille which formed in 1976 and were part of the new wave of British heavy metal, releasing four albums and six singles.
They appeared on the Saturday morning ITV children’s show Saturday Banana. The producers of that show were later involved in the TVS production No 73 and prompted Neil to go for an audition.
He made his TV debut on the TVS show as Neil (1983 – 1988), later renamed as 7T3 (1988).
In 1984, he auditioned for Blue Peter.
He is best remembered as the popular presenter of ITV’s long-running programme Art Attack (1990 – 2007), which was one of the most decorated in TV history with over 30 awards worldwide including 2 BAFTAs.

He briefly appeared as a guest on ITV 2’s Celebrity Juice on 8th November 2012 (series 8, episode 11), where among other things, he discussed the ending of Art Attack.
In 2017, Neil stepped down from the band Marseille, owing to his consultancy work on children’s television.
He is an ambassador for the Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II described his work as “ingenious”.
