Aline was born in Maryport, Cumberland. She attended Cheltenham Ladies’ College.
She was a radio announcer before joining Southern Television in the early 1960s, as an announcer/news presenter.
She later appeared on the regional news programme Day by Day and their tea-time women’s magazine programme, Houseparty.
However, she is best known as “Bunty” James, one of the quartet of presenters on the children’s educational science series How, alongside Fred Dineage, Jack Hargreaves and Jon Miller (11th April 1966 – 4th May 1967 and 16th January 1970 – 24th March 1976).
The series was originally shown in the Southern TV region only, before being networked from January 1967.
In 1994, she reunited with her former How colleagues.
She appeared as a storyteller on BBC TV’s Play School (February 1968) and in the TV film The Happening (1991).
In the 1990s, she was the owner of a gallery and craft shop near Wick. She later moved to live in Caithness, Scotland.
In 2018, at the age of 85, under her married name of Gunn, her first book See You Around was published.
It was about a group of amateur sleuths in a care home who help a police inspector, son of one of the ladies, to help solve a murder.
