Correspondence
Paul R. Jackson corresponded with Sue in December 2017, after ex-LWT colleague Trish Bertram, kindly put them in touch.
“I was dubbed the ‘housewife from Cheshire’, when I appeared on Esther Rantzen’s The Big Time (BBC One, 16th July 1980), trying out as a presenter on Nationwide, for one night as an amateur. Nationwide ran an early report about the experience on 20th May 1980.
“I appeared on Did You See?, presented by Ludovic Kennedy (BBC Two, November – December 1980).
“It was this that brought me to the attention of bosses at LWT, where I started my career as an in-vision continuity announcer on LWT in September 1981. I later presented the arts show for Radio City in Liverpool and featured as a newscaster in Screen Two: The McGuffin (1986).
”During the early 1980s, I combined continuity work for LWT with researching and writing for Children’s ITV and in 1987 started producing daytime television for the Lifestyle Channel, presented by David Hamilton.
“After a brief spell on This Morning, and a year in Bristol with the groundbreaking Live TV (transmitted from a shopping centre), I joined BBC Enterprises (now BBC Worldwide) as a video producer, then publisher, launching the BBC History magazine and publishing Simon Schama’s A History of Britain.
“In 2001, I became international director for BBC Worldwide’s DVD business and then director of programming for 2 Entertain, the BBC Worldwide/Woolworths joint venture. Here I worked with the Doctor Who team to develop special scenes and other additional material for DVD releases and with Sir David Attenborough on a DVD encyclopaedia.
“I retired in 2012, but continue the Doctor Who connection, as I voice the audio navigation commands for all the new series releases.”
