Peter was educated at school in his native city of Cardiff in Wales.
Before his career had begun, his family were already well known in Wales and the West of England – his father, Bruce Lewis, was a highly popular presenter for Television Wales and West (TWW).
Peter began announcing on the station during the mid to late-1960s.
During this period, he became one of the youngest people on British television to present his own programme – it was Movie Magazine (the precursor to Cinema and BBC TV’s Film series) – an original idea devised by his father Bruce and Peter Duval.
Peter joined London Weekend Television during its opening month in August 1968 and around the same time, freelanced for Yorkshire Television.
Later, he chose to concentrate on his work for LWT, becoming the first person to broadcast from the company’s new headquarters on the south bank of the River Thames in 1971 (later known as The London Studios).
He voiced presentation trails for BBC Television (c. 1971) and also announced on weekdays for HTV West (c. 1981).
In 1974, Peter helped to launch the first independent commercial radio station in the North East of England – Metro Radio. He was the station’s first programme controller while his father was the first managing director.
His father also wrote the original proposal to the IBA for Metro and later for GWR in Swindon.
In 1977, he was promoted to become senior announcer at LWT. He remained in this role until 1997, when he left the station to pursue a management consultancy career in the United States.
During his time at LWT, Lewis was a regular newsreader for London News Headlines (later LWT News Headlines) between 1982 and 1988.
He moved to Tampa, Florida after a brief stint in Houston, Texas and ran a management consultancy company in Florida.
In 1998, he returned briefly to LWT, to record continuity links for their 30th anniversary weekend.
