Longstanding Look East presenter Stewart White took colleagues and viewers by surprise tonight by announcing live on air that he was leaving the BBC after 37 years.

Tom was born in Norwich. He began his career as a newspaper journalist on the Eastern Evening News and when Anglia TV opened, he worked on in-house commercials and even had a small role in one of their dramas. He compered a weekly live pop show, Beat on the Border, from Border TV in Carlisle and returned years later to the ITV regional company as an announcer/newsreader.

Graham was born in the East End of London. He was stationed at RAF Coltishall during his National Service.

Jim was born in Suffolk. He was employed by the Met Office from 1968 until 1986. His career started in East Anglia at RAF stations in 1968. He later moved to Bracknell for a few years as a programmer on the Met Office supercomputer.

Chris – a former actor – was born in Hambledon, Surrey. After working as a farm labourer, he joined the British Army and trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and in 1953 received a commission in the Royal Regiment of Artillery of the British Army. He was promoted to lieutenant in February 1955, but resigned his commission in September 1956. He had a relatively undistinguished acting career – his greatest screen role being Charlton Heston’s body double in Ben-Hur (1959). He later appeared as an interviewer in Ask Mr Pastry (1961) and as himself in Mr Pastry’s Pet Shop (1962).

Peter had a very distinctive, deep, rich voice. He was an announcer at Southern TV (1969 – 1971) and a newsreader for BBC Norwich’s Look East.
…Akua, Nana
Nana was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in July 1971 (as Nana Akua Amotemaa-Appiah), after her parents came over from Ghana in the 1960s. She relocated to the US with her parents, aged 11, but would later return to the UK and study business and finance at university. She has worked for Kiss 100 (1995 – 1997) and Capital FM, initially in a business capacity but she also provided voiceovers. In her spare time, Nana worked as a DJ at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital Radio. Spotted by Richard Park, she was offered a trainee post as a DJ on Capital FM’s Café. She soon had her own drivetime show at London-based commercial radio station Fusion 107.3.

Judi was born in Lincoln. She is a former Anglia Television announcer (1973 – 1976). She moved to BBC TV in Norwich, where she worked as an announcer and newsreader/reporter on Look East.

Stewart’s broadcasting career began with a very short pre-programme announcement on the BBC World Service. He went on to work at BBC Radio Brighton and later BBC Radio Derby, where he produced and presented various news and entertainment programmes.

Ellie studied sociology at Bath University. On leaving university, Ellie’s aspirations to work in television got off to a good start with a work placement on the BBC’s Kilroy programme; she later became Robert Kilroy-Silk’s PA. She moved on to join GMTV, as a runner initially but went on to become a trainee producer.
It was then back to the books to study for a post-graduate diploma in broadcast journalism at Birmingham University. Ellie subsequently got a position as a trainee journalist with Carlton. She later moved to HTV West as a journalist, followed by a return to GMTV as Scotland correspondent.
In October 2003, she joined BBC Look East as a presenter and reporter, covering the west of the region.
